About our Department

Orthopedics department of MMC has vision to take care of the orthopedic problems in an around Kozhikode district and is well equipped to deal with orthopedic emergencies including all fractures and dislocations as well as elective cases including Arthroplasty, Arthroscopy, Spine Surgery, Deformity Correction and problems in pediatric orthopedics. The Arthroplasty division caters to the need of many patients with pain and deformity of both knees as well as hip, affecting their activities of daily living and are well satisfied with the procedure and care given in this hospital. The Rehabilitation department takes care of all the patients who has chronic problems and help the patient to regain their activities of daily living, as quickly as possible.

Ligamentous injuries affect not only the sports persons but also the general public involved in Road traffic accidents and other household injuries. The Arthroscopy division helps these patients get back to their work after successful surgery and rehabilitation.

Backpain is a common problem, which affect most of the people at any point of their life. Our hospital has got enough expertise and infrastructure to correctly diagnose the cause, treat them and rehabilitate them with good support from PMR division.

We conduct regular free camps both in hospital and as well as in outskirts of town & village to provide awareness regarding how to prevent from common orthopedic injury and also to screen for common orthopedic problems.

We regularly engage in various teaching learning methods, which include regular joined clubs, Seminar presentations and workshops, along with research to improve the understanding of this great subject in our Society-Orthopedics and PMR.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery:

If your knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be hard for you to perform simple activities, such as walking or climbing stairs. You may even begin to feel pain while you are sitting or lying down.

If nonsurgical treatments like medications and using walking supports are no longer helpful, you may want to consider total knee replacement surgery. Joint replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure to relieve pain, correct leg deformity, and help you resume normal activities.

Cause

The most common cause of chronic knee pain and disability is arthritis. Although there are many types of arthritis, most knee pain is caused by just three types: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Osteoarthritis- This is an age-related "wear and tear" type of arthritis. It usually occurs in people 50 years of age and older, but may occur in younger people, too. The cartilage that cushions the bones of the knee softens and wears away. The bones then rub against one another, causing knee pain and stiffness.

Rheumatoid arthritis- This is a disease in which the synovial membrane that surrounds the joint becomes inflamed and thickened. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage and eventually cause cartilage loss, pain, and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of a group of disorders termed "inflammatory arthritis."

Post-traumatic arthritis- This can follow a serious knee injury. Fractures of the bones surrounding the knee or tears of the knee ligaments may damage the articular cartilage over time, causing knee pain and limiting knee function.

Is Total Knee Replacement for You?

The decision to have total knee replacement surgery should be a cooperative one between you, your family, your family physician, and your orthopaedic surgeon. Your physician may refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon for a thorough evaluation to determine if you might benefit from this surgery.

When Surgery Is Recommended ?

A knee that has become bowed as a result of severe arthritis.

Bowed knee deformity.

There are several reasons why your doctor may recommend knee replacement surgery. People who benefit from total knee replacement often have:

Severe knee pain or stiffness that limits your everyday activities, including walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs. You may find it hard to walk more than a few blocks without significant pain and you may need to use a cane or walker

Moderate or severe knee pain while resting, either day or night

Chronic knee inflammation and swelling that does not improve with rest or medications

Knee deformity — a bowing in or out of your knee

Failure to substantially improve with other treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, lubricating injections, physical therapy, or other surgeries

Candidates for Surgery

There are no absolute age or weight restrictions for total knee replacement surgery.

Recommendations for surgery are based on a patient's pain and disability, not age. Most patients who undergo total knee replacement are age 50 to 80, but orthopaedic surgeons evaluate patients individually. Total knee replacements have been performed successfully at all ages, from the young teenager with juvenile arthritis to the elderly patient with degenerative arthritis.

Orthopaedic Evaluation

An evaluation with an orthopaedic surgeon consists of several components:

  • A medical history. Your orthopaedic surgeon will gather information about your general health and ask you about the extent of your knee pain and your ability to function.
  • A physical examination. This will assess knee motion, stability, strength, and overall leg alignment.
  • X-rays. These images help to determine the extent of damage and deformity in your knee.
  • Other tests. Occasionally blood tests, or advanced imaging such as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, may be needed to determine the condition of the bone and soft tissues of your knee.

Infrastructure

The orthopedic department in MMC has state of art facilities in different subspecialties in orthopedics as mentioned. The arthroplasty division has complete total knee replacement solution and is well equipped to take care of complex deformities with arthritis of knee joint as well as hip joint. The implantation which we use primarily are that of Zimmer, Smith & Nephew and Stryker & Depuy.

The arthroscopy unit is well equipped with all essential and latest instrumentations which include both 30 Degree and 70 Degree arthroscope along with 3 chip HD camera as well as the other instrumentations from smith and nephew. The instrumentation we use are that of Smith & Nephew, Arthrex and other companies.

We have complete set of spine instrumentations which helps us to do common spinal procedures like Laminectomy, Disectomy, Posterior lumber fusion with instrumentation. We have image intensifiers which are 2 in number, one is of Allengers HF-49 and other is of Siemens -CIOS select, which give high quality images in Operation Theatre and guide us to place the implants accurately.

Our operation theatre has got instrumentation for dealing with basic trauma which includes small fragment set, general instrumentation set, Nail set, large fragment sets and specific fixation sets like proximal humerus fixation sets, interrochanteric fixation sets, proximal femoral nail set. We have state of art fracture OT table, which helps us to place the patients for good fracture reduction and also facilities a good image under image intensifier. We have state of art drill machines by Stryker as well as saw which help us in routine fracture fixation surgeries as well as complex surgeries including arthroscopy, total knee replacement surgery.

Orthopedic department is well supported by super specialty departments, which includes Plastic surgery department, which takes care of vascular injuries along with soft tissue coverage of exposed bones and soft tissue coverage for open injuries and which has got state of art facility including dermatome measurement.

The Radio diagnosis department has facilities of 1.5 T MRI, 64 slice CT scan and ultrasound examination round the clock.
Orthopedic OPD has got good facility of seeing the patients with spacious rooms, waiting area and plaster application room, where we can apply plasters to needy patients in emergency basis or as early as possible.
We also have bio skill lab which facilities for basic training for house surgeons as well as consultant
